Name/ nickname Agathe

Where do you live? Brussels

What’s your occupation? I study interior architecture and built environment.

Can you describe yourself in just one sentence? Oh I think the cat got my tongue!

Why did you get tattoos? I started to alter my skin to mark a particular life landmark. And then it grew on me, the pain and the happiness you feel when you see your skin decorated.

What do you like about tattoos? I like tattoos because they’re a way to claim your body as your own. To enhance and beautify certain body parts. The harmony of the designs and their placement are crucial. You also have to trust your tattoo artist and think about getting a one of a kind design you’ll keep for a lifetime.

What/who inspires you artistically speaking? I love flora, the delicate intricacy of it. I like minimalist designs too, simple and symbolic pieces.

Who are your tattoo artists? Caroline Karénine, Capitaine plum’, Greg (Briko Tattoo, Lille)

Can you tell us the stories behind your tattoos (number, placements…)? The first one was really small. It’s on my inner arm next to my armpit. It was just a symbol, like a talisman I could carry around with me. Soon after that, I was craving a nice big piece that would cover a lot of skin on the ribs, like jewellery. Something I’d like to see everyday and would look good over the years. The latest one is this small crown above my elbow. This one has a special meaning, it’s a tribute to an artist I like a lot.

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? I was 19.

How did your friends and family react? When I first told them about my plan, they seemed a bit concerned yet interested. When they saw the finished piece, they realised I knew what I was doing and eventually liked it.

When are you getting the next one? I’m going to get on with my life for a while. I’ll probably think of really meaningful designs along the way.

Give us your own definition of the word tattoo: It’s an art work with – or without – symbolic significance. It’s part of the body, it sticks with you no matter what and tells stories about you to others. To me, tattoos are a private matter, something very personal. Yet you still have to deal with how others perceive you. Sometimes you want to show off, you pull up you sleeve, sometimes you just don’t. That makes you different in the eyes of others. It’s a really interesting thing about tattooing.

And what about when you get old? I don’t think about it now.

Who’s your favourite artist/what’s your favourite piece? Yves Klein and Basquiat. Lately, I’ve had a super crush on the Hell’O Monsters collective.

What’s your favourite place to eat? Chana at Parvis de Saint Gilles. It’s a lovely place and the falafels are to die for.

To you, what’s the perfect song? Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division.

What excites you right now? Discovering, getting inspired, creating.

Nom / surnom Agathe

Où habites-tu ? Bruxelles

Tu as commencé à quel âge ?

Ton peintre, artiste, oeuvre favorite ?

»love will tear us appart » joy division

Name/ nickname Agathe Where do you live?
